Courses:

Charts, Graphs and Infographics (Online Workshop)

Whether you are planning to write your High School Equivalency exams, go back to school, or just want to build your skills to understand all the information and data we see every day, knowing how to read and understand tables, charts and graphs is an important skill.
 
In this workshop we will cover:
  • Common types of tables, charts and graphs including:
    • Line or bar graphs
    • Pie charts
    • Scientific of technical diagrams
  • How to find and interpret the information in the charts, graphs and tables
  • What infographics are, and how to read them
  • Tips and tricks on how to spot misleading information in charts and graphs

Persuasive Writing: Paragraphs, Essays, Emails and Letters (Online Workshop)

This workshop will help you understand and build the basic patterns used to write strong paragraphs and persuasive essays.

We will discuss:
  • tips for writing a good paragraph, essay, email or letter
  • how to write a strong opening paragraph, or "thesis statement"
  • how to organize your ideas and supporting evidence
  • how to write a strong closing or "conclusion" paragraph
  • using opinions and facts to make your argument

CAEC Prep Study Group - Get Ready for the New GED or Trades Entrance Exam

Join our study group twice a week to brush up on your math, reading, writing and study skills.

Participants can work at their own pace, on the materials that are most relevant to their own education goals. Whether you are planning to go back to school, write the new CAEC exams, start an apprenticeship, or just get ahead at work, you will have a tutor and team to support and cheer you on along the way!

In this program, we will focus on:

  • Math foundations
    •   Whole numbers
    •   Math facts
    •   Addition and Subtraction
    •   Multiplication and Division
    •   Fractions
    •   Integers
    •   Ratio, Rates and Percentages

Our tutors can also help you with:

    Reading and writing
    •   Develop skimming and scanning strategies
    •   Identify main ideas and supporting details in written texts
    •   Identify and explain compare and contrast relationships in texts
    •   Make inferences based on facts and background information
    •   Organize ideas in a systematic way for writing non-fiction and persuasive texts

We will also help you with:

  • Confidence in learning
  • Time management
  • Study skills
  • Test taking and managing test anxiety

NEW - CELPIP Foundations (CLB 2-3)

This learning opportunity will help you develop your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English.

We will help you build and use new vocabulary, learn about Canadian conversation in community, at work and in daily life. 

Our teacher will also help you with your pronunciation, grammar and idioms (Canadian expressions).

This class is for adults who speak English at about a CLB level 2 - 3.

NEW - CELPIP Prep Course (CLB 4-5)

This CELPIP Prep class is for adult learners who speak English at or near a CLB level 4-5.

We will focus on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, and use practice exams to help prepare you to get the best score possible on the test.

The group will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 1:00 - 2:30 pm

Coffee and Connections: English Conversation Cafe (for Newcomers and Oldtimers)

Join us on Wednesday afternoons for a chance to build connections and meet new people.

This new weekly group is a time to relax, have fun, share stories and practice speaking and listening in English.

Everyone is welcome! Whether you grew up speaking English, are just starting to learn, or want some practice in a fun, relaxed atmosphere, please come join us.

There is no cost to attend, but we ask that you please RSVP by filling out our registration form below.

Basic Computer Bootcamp Level 1 (Winter 2025)

Bring your own laptop or use one of ours!

These sessions are designed for people learning Windows PCs, Microsoft Word, and basic email functions.

We will cover the following topics:

  • Basic Knowledge of Computers
    • Important vocabulary
    • Common hardware and accessories
    • Operating systems and applications
  • File Management
    • Types of computer drives and pointing actions
    • Basic file management
    • Copy, move, delete, and rename files/folders
    • File explorer and searching
  • Word Processing
    • Create a document
    • Save, retrieve, and print documents
    • Formatting a document (fonts, margins headers, footers, etc.)

Gain confidence, practice using your device, get to know your settings, navigate the apps you use in your daily life more easily, and learn how to keep yourself safe and protected online.

Foundations for Learning: MATH (online anytime with in-person tutoring)

With a mix of online lessons and exercises, support from a NorQuest College instructor AND a tutor here in Whitecourt, these courses will give you the flexibility to work at your own pace, and get all the help you need along the way.

Choose the course that's right for you:

  • Pre-Trades Math and Science Preparation Foundations
  • Pre-Algebra Math Foundations
  • High School Math Prep Foundations

This "online anytime" course takes most people 10 - 14 weeks to complete.

One-on-one Tutoring

Adult students (18 years and older) are paired with a trained tutor who can help you improve your reading, writing, math, or help you with basic computer and digital skills. Tutoring for new speakers of English (ESL/ELL) is also available.

Each tutor and student pair will work one-on-one, at their own pace, on your goals in reading, writing, math or English Language Learning.

Gain confidence, develop and strengthen your skills at your own pace, and open doors to new learning, community and employment opportunities.

Want to improve your reading or writing? Need to feel more confident understanding and filling out forms?

Work one-on-one with a tutor, or join a small informal group to improve your literacy so you feel more confident to:

  • Read and understand important safety information, policies and procedures, fill out forms or take on more responsibility at work
  • Read with your kids, grandkids and other important children in your life
  • Understand and fill out forms for school, doctor’s office, or government services

Math and Numeracy

Whether you want to improve your math skills to help out with homework, manage your family budget, or you need it for work, the CALP at NorQuest can help.

We can offer classes or pair you with a tutor to build your skills and confidence with:

  • Whole numbers, addition, subtraction
  • Multiplication, and division
  • Fractions and decimals
  • And more!

English Language Learning

The Community Adult Learning Program at NorQuest can help you improve your English. Work one-on-one with a tutor, or join a small informal group to:

  • Practice your conversational English
  • Learn English for the workplace
  • Study English to help you connect with your community (school, doctor, government, volunteer opportunities…)

High School Equivalency and Trades Entrance Readiness

Are you thinking about going back to school? The Community Adult Learning Program at NorQuest can help you set yourself up for success.

  • Work one-on-one with a tutor, or join small informal study groups to practice and improve the skills for learning you need to get ready for a return to formal education
  • Go back to the basics to build your foundational math, reading and writing skills
  • Take an onlie course with face-to-face personal support at our Whitecourt Learning Centre. Find the right combination of online, independent study, and personal support to prepare you for your next steps
